After much grief attempting to sync my HTC S720 with my Windows Vista x64 Mobile Device Center 6.1, I was able to get syncing to work in the same manner. I had uninstalled WMDC, then did the hard reset. I then installed WMDC, plugged in my device, and PRESTO! It worked as well as it should have the first time!
